Thomas Paine - thoughts for the mind |
"I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good." Thomas Paine "Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it." Thomas Paine " The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is reason." Thomas Paine " When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon."" Thomas Paine " But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants is the liberty of appearing." |
Thomas Paine Born: 02/09/1737 in Thetford, United Kingdom Died: 06/08/1809 in Greenwich Village, New York City, NY Married Mary Lambert in 1759 but Mary died while giving birth in 1760 He married Elizabeth Ollive in 1771, but separated in 1774. Thomas Paine is known as influential thinker, writer and philosopher. He was involved in the French and American revolutions. Paine is one of the man who agreed and lived the ideals of the Enlightenment. Paine met and impressed Benjamin Franklin, who helped him to sail to America. There he published a revolutionary pamphlet titled 'Common Sense', which was a call for American independence, ruled by a just republican government. John Adams wrote about Paine: 'Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain.' While he was imprisoned in France, Paine wrote 'The Age of Reason'. Paine explained a Deist belief system – a personal relationship with God, without the interference of priest and organized religions. When he died, he was mourned by few. |
